Combining the best qualities of two great American breeds, the Appaloosa and the Tennessee Walking Horse. The Walkaloosa is a gaited Appaloosa: an Appaloosa with a smooth four-beat intermediate gait instead of or in addition to the trot. Some of the foundation Appaloosas had what was called an "Indian Shuffle", a ground-covering smooth way of travelling that was prized by the Nez Perce tribe. Unfortunately, the indian shuffle is quickly lost when breeding to non-shuffling horses. So to the noble Appaloose with it's intelligence, sturdiness and thriftiness, we breed to other easy-gaited horses, usually the Tennessee Walking Horse. The TWH contributes refinement, it's smooth running walk, and it's calm, personable demeanor. The resulting horse is superior in many desirable attributes: a smooth saddle gait, refinement, good bone and conformation, intelligence, a calm and willing attitude, bright color, hard feet that don't need shoes even on rocky mountain trails, and the ability to thrive without expensive supplements.
